National Grid’s job is to connect people to the energy they use, safely. We are at the heart of one of the greatest challenges facing our society – delivering clean energy to support our world long into the future.
Here in the UK we own and operate the network of pipelines, compressor stations, pressure reduction stations and block valves that make up the natural gas national transmission system (NTS). We also operate the electricity transmission system across Great Britain and own the electricity transmission network in England and Wales.
The NTS is the backbone of the natural gas supply throughout the UK, transporting the gas we use to heat our homes and power industry from import terminals around the country to the local distribution system. The network is now more than 7,600 kilometres in length and growing. All gas in Great Britain flows through the network on its way to consumers and we work with other companies to ensure that gas is available where and when it’s needed.
We have extensive expertise in designing, building and operating safe and effective high-pressure gas pipelines in the UK. Our team of talented engineers and project specialists here on the Humber are putting that expertise to good use to make the replacement of the River Humber pipeline a reality.
