Answers to questions we're often asked about the project

Here you’ll find answers to some of the questions that we’ve often been asked about the project. We’ll keep these up-to-date as our work progresses and we hope that they may answer some of the questions that you have about our work to replace the pipeline.

What are the hours of operation?

The consent for our works and the traffic management plan agreed with the local authorities and Highways Agency, limit our working times to:

Monday to Friday: 07.00 – 19.00, with heavy goods vehicles (HGV) restricted to between 09.00 – 15.15 during school term time.

Saturday: 08.00 – 16.00, with HGVs restricted to 08.00 – 13.00.

There only exceptions to these times are tunnelling which is a continuous activity, and works that may be required in the event of an emergency.

How will you minimise traffic disruption to local communities?

Since work started at the Goxhill site, we’ve put in place a robust traffic management plan which includes speed limits and monitoring, noise limits, restricted hours of operation, the construction of a new access road for site traffic and a dedicated community engagement team, who can be reached via email, freepost and telephone.

My lawn/verge has been damaged, what will you do about this?

National Grid is responsible for restoring any damage to property caused by drivers of vehicles from our project, including the grass verges along roads outlined in the traffic management plan. Please notify us of any such damage and a project representative will visit the affected area to assess and ensure appropriate repairs are carried out.

I have seen a speeding works vehicle, what will you do about this?

We have a strict traffic management plan in place, identifying the roads which can be used by project staff and imposing lower than legal speed limits on these roads. All our staff and contractors are fully briefed on the traffic management plan prior to entering the site as we aim to ensure the safety of the local community and project staff throughout the duration of the works.

We take a zero tolerance approach to contactors or staff not following the traffic management plan and we conduct our own regular visible speed controls in the local area. We encourage local residents to call our community line with details of any vehicles suspected of breaking the traffic management plan.

Will the passing places be made permanent after the project has ended?

We’ve been working with North Lincolnshire Council and the Highways Agency and have installed a number of passing places along Ferry Road, East Marsh Road and Chapel Field Road to ease traffic flow in the local area. After the works have finished, it will be at the discretion of North Lincolnshire Council to decide the future of the passing places.

Will the new road at Soff Lane be made permanent?

A section of temporary road on private land at Soff Lane has been required as part of the traffic management plan for our construction works.  We’ve worked closely with our contractors, landowners and other stakeholders to ensure a suitable design is in place for that, but the rights we have to install it are only temporary.  We therefore have to remove it and reinstate the land when we’ve completed our works.
